Positive balance in online gambling in New Zealand
According to the 3rd quarter 2019 report published by SRIJ, online gambling activity (both sports betting and casino gaming) continues to grow, with entities providing gambling betting services seeing their gross revenue increase by $ 8.8 million. The number of registered players has also been growing (another 149 thousand new registered players), along with sites that provide sports betting or gambling services: there are 2 more licensed entities in relation to the same period in 2018, a total of 18 entities, 10 of them operating online casinos. The amounts spent on bets follow the general growth trend, amounting to 54 million dollars. Another factor that demonstrates the growth of online gambling in New Zealand is the increased frequency of gambling among players. Indeed, in the report for the last quarter of 2019, the SRIJ found that 33% of players placed more than one bet on casino games .
Naturally, the growth of activity generates higher tax revenues for the state; in the last quarter, the online gambling excise tax collected 6,4 million dollars more than in the 3rd quarter of 2018.
Preferences of New Zealanders
The majority of New Zealand players are between 25 and 44 years old, and most of the new registrations are among those under the age of 35, which means that online gambling remains a more popular activity among younger sections of the population.
As usual, New Zealanders have shown a preference for casino games, to the detriment of sports betting , with slot machines standing out with great prominence. The second favorite game of New Zealanders is French roulette and the third the poker . As for poker in tournament mode, it comes in fourth place in the preferences of domestic players.
Exclusion
The number of players who chose to inhibit themselves from activities related to online gambling also showed growth. In fact, the number of players who decided to exclude themselves increased by almost 5000, compared to the figure found in June. Of the 43.3 thousand self-excluded players, almost 87,000 excluded themselves permanently, while 13% opted for a temporary exclusion. These figures denote the growing awareness of New Zealand players for the cause of responsible gambling, which is extremely positive.
Combating illegal gambling
In the last quarter of 2019, the SRIJ ordered the closure of a total of 24 unlicensed illegal sites, having blocked the IP of 12 of these sites. Following this blockade, the SRIJ made 13 participations to the Public Prosecutor's Office, to institute criminal proceedings.
